Photographs are important memories. Learn how to keep old photos in good condition, so they will last for years to come.

Photographs are precious memories, and if you like to take pictures, then you need to learn how to take care of them properly. How many old photos do you own that were never cared for years ago? You want to be able to pass down your photos to your children or your family, so you have to learn how to care for them and how to store them. If, however, you already have old pictures, then you may wonder what you can do to save them. Here are some tips that will help you care for your old treasured photographs.

What to do with torn or creased photos

If you have a box of old pictures, then chances are at least some of them are torn, creased or even cracked. One of the best things you can do is to go to a local store that specializes in photographs and purchase archival safe photo sleeves. Carefully place the picture in the sleeve. If the picture is peeling, you might want to consider placing it in a shallow box instead. It is not recommended that you use tape or other adhesives on these delicate pictures because this could further the damage. If the pictures are extremely old and delicate, it is best to handle the picture while wearing cotton gloves to reduce the chances of getting fingerprints on the surface.

Pictures that are stuck to frames or paper

Many old pictures may be stuck inside the frame to the glass or may have been glued into a scrapbook. Even old "magnetic" photo albums can cause damage to photos. You will want to be especially careful with these. If the front of a picture is stuck to glass, you may need to have a professional take a look so it is not ruined.

If the back is stuck to a piece of paper with either tape or glue, you will want to carefully peel the paper away from the backing of the picture. Many times, photos that have been attached into albums or scrapbooks for years will begin to yellow. This is why it is always a good idea to use archival safe adhesives and glues on your newer pictures.

Displaying old photos

You may love the idea of displaying your old photographs, and this is a great idea if it is done properly. It is never wise to frame and display the actual photograph. Instead, you should scan it and have it printed out for framing. You will need to keep the original stored safely away. Remember that humidity and sunlight can damage photos over time. If you do not have access to a scanner, take your picture to a photo processing center and have them help you scan and print the photo.
