Nikon D3s DSLR for PhotojournalistsNikon Improves Their Flagship Digital Camera For Professional Photog
Nikon improved the best DSLR for low light photography to make their new D3s. Nikon's new DSLR captures usable images under low previously impossible light conditions.
The original Nikon D3 assumed the mantel of king of the sports and photojournalist cameras, dethroning the Canon 1D MK111. Nikon upgraded key areas of the D3 to produce the “s” evolutionary model as a new model 1D from Canon looms. Edward Fasano, general manager for Marketing, SLR Systems Products at Nikon Inc. “The ruggedly constructed D3s was engineered to address the real-world needs of professional photographers and provides them with a tool that, when combined with their skills, delivers stunning images in a broad range of shooting conditions and assignment requirements.” ISONikon extended the useable ISO range of in the D3s with an incredible ISO 200 to ISO 12800 as standard, with the noise control and dynamic range made famous by the D3. Photographers of any discipline now have additional latitude to capture quality images in most lighting situations. When needed, ISO sensitivity can be expanded from Lo 1 (ISO 100 equivalent) up to Hi 3. Professional photographers shooting with the Nikon D3s are now at an advantage when shooting indoor sports, stadium events at night, dimly lit spot news or any other shooting situation where light is limited. Nikon says photojournalists shooting at ISOs as high as 12800 with the D3S can take commercial-quality, tack-sharp images in low light at action-freezing shutter speeds. Sensor CleaningThe Nikon D3s now comes with an Image Sensor Cleaning function to reduce dust accumulation on the optical low pass filter (OLPF) in front of the image sensor. In the field photojournalists sometimes need to change lenses in less than ideal conditions, letting dust into the camera and onto the sensor. The OLPF oscillates at four frequencies to shake dust particles off the sensor. Photographers can set Sensor Cleaning to cycle automatically when the camera is powered on, turned off, or on demand. Movie ModeThe Nikon D3s provides outstanding low-light ability for HD video clips. The refined D-Movie mode for the FX-format offers smooth 1280x720 video at a cinematic 24fps, with a new algorithm that Nikon says severely reduces the phenomenon of “rolling shutter” typical of DSLRs while panning. The Nikon D3S features a built-in monaural microphone and also has a stereo microphone input for hot-shoe microphone mounting, or the use of wireless microphones for interviews or spot news. Francois Marit, Photo Technical Manager at global news provider, Agence France Presse, said: “Since we started using the Nikon D3, we have also been exploring movie capture to see exactly how it can help us. Now the D3S gives us exactly what we need, the ability to shoot pictures and movies with one piece of professional equipment. This enables us to transmit complete packages of still images and movie clips from the thousands of news and sports events we cover every week, and will really give us the edge in both online and print formats” Lateral Chromatic Aberration ReductionThe D3s corrects color fringes caused by chromatic aberrations that appear at the edges of different image elements, particularly white poles. Lateral chromatic aberrations are corrected regardless of lens type, whether telephoto, wide-angle, non-CPU and other types of NIKKOR lenses, and helps produce highly refined, edge-to-edge image integrity that professionals demand. Price and AvailabilityThe Nikon D3s digital SLR is scheduled to be available at US Nikon Authorized dealers beginning in late November 2009 at an estimated selling price of $US5,199.95
